Q: I work on my feet all day and they always feel sore and tired. Is there anything I can do for fast relief?

A: This is a common problem for my patients and there are many things that can be done to alleviate foot pain and soreness naturally. Epsom salt is a common remedy that is easily found in any drugstore. Epsom salt is a pure mineral compound of sulfate and magnesium, which is known for its ability to relax the muscles. A warm Epsom salt bath can be used to reduce swelling and ease sore feet and is also commonly used by professional athletes and weekend warriors to relieve muscle soreness throughout the whole body.

My go-to recipe for an Epsom salt foot soak is outlined below. If you enjoy fragrance there are many essential oils that can be incorporated for additional effects. Peppermint essential oil is invigorating to the senses and will lift your energy and mood. Rosemary can also provide a mood boost and it contains anti-inflammatory properties. Add three to five drops of your favorite essential oil to the Epsom salt soak blend and breathe in the benefits.

You could also try a tea soak. Green or black tea is an energizing mid-day pick-me-up and chamomile is great for relaxation. As with the Epsom salt soak, you can add essential oils such as peppermint and rosemary for energy or lavender to help you unwind.

Soothing Epsom Salt Soak
Boil three to five cups water and let it cool to a warm temperature.  Add 1/2 to 1 cup Epsom salt and stir until dissolved. If desired, add three drops of your favorite essential oil. Soak your feet for at least 15 to 30 minutes.

Energizing Green Tea Soak
Make three to five cups of strong green tea. Add enough warm water to fill your container and submerge your feet. (Usually a 2:1 ratio works well. For example, for five cups of tea you can add 10 cups water. If this doesn’t cover your feet then add another cup of tea and two cups of water). Let cool to a comfortable temperature. If desired, add a few drops of peppermint or rosemary essential oil to help boost mood and energy.

Relaxing Chamomile Soak
Make three cups of chamomile tea. Add six cups warm water and let cool to comfortable temperature. If desired, add a few drops of lavender essential oil. This soak can be used before bedtime to improve relaxation before sleep.
