Update: Now that we’re back in March Madness, we thought it would be fun to revisit these videos on how to succeed with University of Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett (who’s having another great season).

For Tony Bennett, head coach of the men’s basketball team at UVA, understanding and enacting humility is part and parcel of recognizing the many gifts of life. In this video, Bennett—a former NBA player, and recognized in the basketball world as one of the greatest coaches of our time—speaks with Sonia Jones about the value of humility for basketball players both on and off the court. Losing a game, he says, generally relates to a loss of identity: when we’re humble, we know what we are and we know what we’re not. “The aim is not false humility,” he says, but rather a balanced understanding of who we really are. This is the first of Bennet’s five pillars, which are central to his coaching methods.
