Making dinner for your family doesn’t have to be an exclusive job for mom or dad. Getting the kids involved not only educates them about food and how to cook early on, but also encourages them to eat healthier, too.

“When we go to the farmer’s market, the children want to try different vegetables that they have never seen before. I let them choose what they want and if I can afford it, I’ll buy it for them,” says mom of three Maya Adam, M.D., who lectures on child health and nutrition at the Stanford School of Medicine. This family ritual particularly resonates with Adam’s son who was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. “He loves being in the kitchen…it empowers him,” she says.

In this video, Adam shares with Sonima founder Sonia Jones her advice to make cooking with the kiddos a fun, simple, and healthy family affair.
