In today’s world we are fortunate to have many modern conveniences that provide instant gratification. While this often makes life easier, it can leave us lacking the ability to remain calm and patient in the face of frustration. By repeating the mantra “patience,” you can return to the moment and become aware of what is, instead of focusing on what you might want to happen. It may be helpful to use mala beads in this meditation for patience to track the number of recitations you do. This method can also help cultivate other feelings, such as kindness or gentleness. (Here is another guided meditation to help you develop self-compassion.) When your thoughts drift off, come back to the recitation. When you’re done with the practice, rest your mind and sit with the feeling that you’ve cultivated.
