The University of Virginia is implementing an ongoing effort to focus more resources on values-based learning and instilling mindful practices into all areas of life for the members of this community. David Germano, Ph.D., the director of religious studies at UVA, explains that the university now emphasizes the question of, “Who do we want our students to be?” rather than concerning solely over the academic rigor of each course. Whether it takes the form of deep reflection, teaching certain values or life lessons to students, or practicing yoga, the institution’s Contemplative Sciences Center has spearheaded many meaningful changes. Such efforts have been extremely successful thus far and are being implemented into different aspects of all UVA’s 11 schools.
