Sharath Jois Visits Stanford: See the Photos!

The first leg of Sharath Jois' 2017 three-city tour has wrapped. What an incredible week! We hope these photos from Stanford bring back wonderful memories for those who attended. The tour continues to UCLA next, then NYC!

What a whirlwind week at Stanford University! For the second year in a row, more than 200 yogis—beginners and advanced alike—rolled out their mats at the Ford Center basketball court to deepen their practice with the lineage holder of Ashtanga, Sharath Jois. In town from Mysore, India, Sharath kicked off his 2017 U.S. tour with a 6-day workshop for both the primary and intermediate series this May 7 to 13. We were thrilled to see so many beginners sign up this year. Their enthusiasm mixed with the energy of long-time practitioners made this gathering extra special for all of us. It was great to see so many new and familiar faces this year.

Thank you all so much for coming out! We’ve put together a little Facebook gallery of the past week. We invite you to tag yourself and share these experiences with friends and family. You might even inspire someone to join us at UCLA (May 16 to 21) or NYC (May 26 to 31)—or maybe come back yourself for a little more mat time. We’d love to see you again!

  • Use the power of your breath to warm up naturally! Take a deep breath, but rather than consciously exhaling and pushing the air out, just sort of “let it go." Take 10 breaths like this in a row, trying to go a little bit deeper with each successive inhale, but putting no force behind your exhalation. After your tenth breath, take in one more deep breath, and this time hold it in. Engage the muscles in your chest, back, and shoulders, as if you were using them to give the air inside your lungs a firm hug. You may notice a warm, tingling sensation inside your chest.

One is an improved relationship with time. When the mind is more present and focused, you have an enhanced understanding and comprehension of a given topic or task. When that becomes a regular part of your working style, it profoundly impacts your ability to learn and work at a high level.

Secondly, your self-esteem improves. Meditation improves your priorities deep down inside, in turn making you more productive. It gives you this feeling of “Yes, I’m a good human", and that lifts your self-esteem up. Confidence comes from the satisfaction in giving or doing something for others. The more you do for others, the better your relationships will be, professional and otherwise.
